LIBRARY ASSISTANT


 Summary
Assists librarians with the administration, organization, and effective daily operation of the Canyon Area Library. Responsible for supporting a broad range of duties related to all aspects of the Canyon Area Library"s programming. Essential Job Functions

Assist patrons at the library"s Circulation Desk and respond to requests made via phone and email. Perform all other circulation, reference and support functions as needed

Train staff in the current Harrington Library Consortium (HLC) database for book returns and checkouts, placing holds, issuing new library cards, etc.

Maintain proper forms and cards for patron records

Perform opening and closing duties as required. Monitor facilities and report any issues to the Library Director.

Supervise staff in the Library Director"s absence or as directed by the Library Director

Assign MARC records to new books, CDs, DVDs, and other materials as required

Enter new materials into the HLC database and delete obsolete records from the HLC database

Oversee Interlibrary Loan (ILL) requests and manage proper paperwork for borrowing and lending. Run ILL reports at the beginning of each month and turn in to Library Director

Coordinate the order of cataloging records not currently in the system (packets)

Oversee and maintain assigned sections of the library collection to ensure order and organization

Responsible for mailing outgoing letters, ILL books, etc. and for checking the Library mailbox in the business office

Collaborate with library team to identify opportunities for new and enhanced programs and to develop innovative programs and activities that meet the needs of the community

Design, create, facilitate, and implement engaging programs and community outreach within the library and surrounding community

Manage assigned programs: prepare crafts and activities in advance, set up and clean up on the day of the program, etc.

Supervise staff and volunteers who help with programming and delegate tasks as needed

Work with Library Director and communications team to promote all library programs and services using a variety of formats and outlets including websites, posters, social media, newsletters and other promotional outlets

Establish and maintain excellent relationships with community partners, including but not limited to schools and other non-profits to provide programs and services

Assist with recruiting, interviewing, and hiring staff

Organize and maintain library supplies: prepare supply lists, purchase supplies as needed for programs with Library Director approval

Maintain tidiness and organization of programming areas and storage spaces, displays, signage, office, and working areas

Assist with the development, improvement, and implementation of policies, procedures, workflows and organizational goals and objectives of the library

Attend and participate in community events, conferences, and staff development and training to enhance skills and knowledge for the continued growth of the library

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up
to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color
vision, and ability to adjust focus Cleanliness and safety requirement as required by City of Canyon practices. Education and Experience
Completion of high school diploma or GED. Some college preferred but not required. Experience in library work preferred but not required.
Membership in the Texas Library Association is required.
