Franz Josef is a dynamic and bustling tourist town, but is also the centre where some of New Zealand's most innovative conservation work is taking place. Rowi are New Zealand's rarest species of kiwi, this role leads the field team responsible for their recovery. Predator Free South Westland is an initiative that will eliminate rats, stoats and possums from 100,000 ha of public conservation land centred around Franz Josef. He angitūtanga | About the role
As the Supervisor Biodiversity, you will provide leadership and guidance to a team of dedicated rangers working to protect rowi and other endangered or vulnerable species in South Westland. This role will require you to work closely with both the rangers undertaking the mahi in the field, and the senior leadership team for the district. You will directly support the Operations Manager and will be responsible for:

  • providing input to work planning across the district
  • ensuring approved work is completed on-time and to a high standard
  • induction and training of new staff members
  • planning and scheduling work for the team, while cultivating a strong health and safety culture
  • facilitating the team to function effectively, ensuring staff safety, wellbeing and development are prioritised. It is expected that part of your time will be spent working directly with staff in the field
  • supporting compliance work within the district/region.
Your team will include permanent, fixed term, and casual staff, Jobs for Nature workers, volunteers, and contractors.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
You will be an experienced people leader or an up-and-coming leader, with demonstrated understanding of field operations. We want to hear from you if you have:

  • demonstrated leader/supervisor skills and the ability to inspire, motivate and coach a passionate team
  • previous experience in biodiversity, particularly in endangered species management programmes
  • excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including experience managing relationships with partners and stakeholders
  • outstanding time management and organisational skills
  • a passion for supporting the success of others
  • data analysis and report writing skills
  • experience with budgeting and contract management
  • a strong health and safety focus as well as a good level of fitness
  • practical experience in the field and backcountry, including strong navigation, map reading, and GPS skills
  • the ability to live and work in a small, remote community.
Desirable:
  • full accreditations for handling kiwi
  • previous experience engaging and working in partnership with iwi and tangata whenua, as well as an understanding of the implications of te Tiriti o te Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) on today's society and conservation is highly desirable.
Most of all you will be approachable, enjoy working as part of a team and have a 'can do' attitude.

Mō te tīma | About the team
You will be joining a positive and enthusiastic team delivering conservation outcomes in South Westland. The Operations team consists of 36 permanent staff spread across three locations- Fox Glacier, Franz Josef and Haast.
The Franz Josef biodiversity team is a sub-set of a larger biodiversity team spread across South Westland, and staff are expected to work across the district as required. The mahi undertaken by the biodiversity team includes:

  • adaptive management of rowi
  • mohua protection
  • marine mammal response
  • kea monitoring and human/wildlife conflict and coexistence management
  • lizard surveys
  • landscape scale predator control.
The District is the second largest (by area) and has the most diverse, dynamic, and pristine environments in the country in which to work. The Glaciers remain key tourist attractions, but the range of front and back country recreation opportunities are endless. The District has two engaging visitor centres – one in Awarua/Haast and a second in Waiau/Franz Josef Glacier. We endeavour to work closely with Kāti Māhaki ki Makaawhio, mana whenua for this District, in all we do.

The salary range for this position is $73,336 to $93,708 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
