Overview:
The Mayor’s Office for Black Male Advancement (BMA) strives to improve outcomes and reduce systemic barriers to advancement for Black men and boys living in Boston.

Under the direction of the Chief of Staff and in collaboration with the Mayor’s Press Office, the Communications Manager is responsible for preparing proactive messaging and educational materials for our city’s Black male communities; designing communications campaigns that tell the real story of Black men and boys in Boston; positioning the Mayor and BMA as thought leaders on Black male issues in the media; and effectively communicating BMA’s agenda, accomplishments, and all other BMA initiatives to our city’s Black male residents.

The Communications Manager will also work directly with the Director of Community Engagement and Communications for the Equity and Inclusion Cabinet.

Equity & Inclusion Cabinet Mission:

The mission of the Equity and Inclusion Cabinet is to ensure that every resident has fair access to City resources and opportunities. We achieve this by embedding equity and inclusion into our current City practices, building our collective capacity on issues of racial and social justice, and fostering a more welcoming and accessible city. The departments in the Equity and Inclusion Cabinet take an anti-poverty approach to their work, focusing on the following areas:

1. Improving outcomes for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, people of color) communities, in particular
immigrants, women, and LGBTQ+ residents.
2. Increasing access for people with disabilities and those who speak a language other than English.
3. Eliminating barriers to fair housing and human rights.

This is not your typical 9-5 pm role. We are looking for folks that share our core values of people-first leadership,intentional strategy, and justice.
Responsibilities:
  • Develops communication campaigns that frame Black men and boys in the press and social media, in their true light, as contributing and enriching residents of our city.
  • Crafts proactive communication strategies, messaging, and/or educational campaigns for our city’s residents on any changes in the immigration landscape.
  • Works swiftly to prepare BMA statements and talking points; and draft citywide communication for residents on Black men and boys news on the local, state and federal level.
  • Identifies opportunities for BMA to provide thought leadership on pertinent and emerging Black male issues and prepare messaging accordingly, advising on opportunities to host or participate in press conferences.
  • Distributes press statements, issues letters, and manages BMA’s social media content.
  • Designs and implements BMA’s communication strategy to raise awareness and visibility of BMA’s agenda, priorities, key initiatives and accomplishments.
  • Builds strong relationships and closely coordinates all strategies, campaigns, and/or messaging with Equity and Inclusion Cabinet leadership and the Mayor’s Press Office.
  • Drafts press releases and advisories, talking points, public-facing letters, and all external-facing communications.
  • Actively engages, cultivates and manages press relationships to help promote and ensure positive coverage of BMA programs, public announcements, special events, and other projects.
  • Manages all of BMA’s public-facing digital content, including website, email newsletter, and social media accounts.
  • Designs and manages all BMA public-facing print materials, including BMA brochure(s), one-pagers, flyers, and reports.
  • Manages BMA’s archive of photos, press clippings, announcements, and other public-facing documents.
  • Creates content and coordinates input on infographics, etc. and newsletter that demonstrate the work, goals, and objectives of BMA.
  • Promotes a culture of internal information sharing and collaborations by sharing intra-departmental information to ensure that all BMA staff are informed and aware of citywide priorities.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of BMA’s communication strategies, using qualitative and quantitative feedback.
  • Attends events as a representative of BMA, which may require working evenings and/or weekends.
  • Participates in regular office responsibilities, including triaging calls and other constituent-related activity.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications:
  • Commitment to BMA’s mission.
  • Two to Four (2-4) years of full-time experience in the field of communications, journalism, and/or marketing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field of study preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of required experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing effective communication strategies.
  • Demonstrated experience with planning, writing, editing, and producing press releases, media advisories, and other print publications.
    • A writing sample will be required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications, and Google Suite.
  • Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities, show flexibility, and prioritize competing tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects.
  • Experience and commitment to working collaboratively with staff, media outlets, constituents, and community partners.
  • Experience managing social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, etc.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and think strategically.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and/or weekends.
  • Knowledge of Boston’s Black Male communities.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, Chinese or Vietnamese).
